Practical steps to spirituality - Part 2

Man is composed of spirit and matter.Spirit has no life and matter too has no life. When the material equipments -body mind and intellect, come in contact with spirit there is an expression of life. The body has five organs of perception and five organs of action.. When the Self functions through the organs of perception he becomes a perceiver. When the Self functionsthrough the organs of actions he becomes an actor. These together form his physical personality
.

Man is gifted with a mind and an intellect. The mind is full of emotions, likes and dislikes, feelings and desires..When the Self functions through the mind he becomes the feeler. This is his emotional personality.Man has an intellect both gross and subtle. It is the function of of the intellect to think ,reason, understand and make decisions. When the Self functions through the gross intellect  this forms his   intellectual personality. It is the subtle intellect only that can think of a reality beyond this world.Only the subtle intellect can discriminate between spirit and matter. The self functioning through the subtle intellect becomes his spiritual personality.Man is the sum total of the physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual personality.

Life consists of 3 main activities.Receipt of stimuli from the world through his organs of perception.Reaction to the stimuli in the mind and Response back to the world through the organs of actions. When  a man is ruled by his mind rather than his intellect, his reactions will be impulsive and agitated. But when he takes the guidance of the intellect his responses will be mature and objective. The kathopanishad gives an allegory of a chariot drawn by 5 horses.wherein the chariot is compared to the humanbody and the horses to the 5 sense organs. The reins stand for the mind and the charioteer to the intellect. If the charioteer is not alert then the reins become loose and the horses will go wild. Similarly if the intellect is not strong ,the mind having no control over the  senses one can imagine where this will lead him to.-to total destruction.

Man has obligatory duties to perform but the mind has powerful likes and dislikes which may come in the way of his doing his duties. So one yields to the desires of the mind doing whatever the mind likes and avoiding what   the mind dislikes to do. In these circumstances it is the discriminating intellect alone that should decide the right course of action at any given point of time.

So only a srong intellect can guide him both in the affairs of of his daily life and also take care of his spiritual life. How to develop a stong intellect?

 to be continued........

  1. Wonderful article. What are the 5 organs that you talk about - is it eye (seeing0, ear (hearing), nose (smelling), skin (feeling) and tongue (taste)?

I gather that the mind and the intellect are connected but not separate in their functioning. One needs the other to function. For example, in mentally challenged patients, does their intellect work? If yes, then the analogy of the five horses and a chariot isn't really spot on isn't it?

  2. The five organs of perception are eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin. They taken in stimuli from the external world. They are colour and form for the eyes, sound for the ears, smell for the nose, taste for the tongue and touch for the skin. The organs of actions send out responses back into the world. They are hands ,feet, mouth and organs of evacuation and reproduction.
As already explained the mind is the emotional personality that feels the emotions like joy and sorrow ,love and hate, affection ,passion and anger. The intellect is the thinking personality that discriminates, decides etc .The Self is the unconditioned pure consciousness the Reality. It appears as though it is conditioned by these material equipments of body mind and intellect.
The mind and intellect of mentally challenged persons will definitely be working on a very lower level, hence the analogy cannot be applied to them
