the beauty of questioning

HARI  OM

Practical  steps  to  spirituality-  section 6  part  69

The  Gita  revisited

The  beauty  of  questioning

The  major  Hindu  scriptures  such  as  the  Upanishads  ,  the  Bhagavad  Gita  ,  are  all  in  the  form  of  a  dialogue  between  the  teacher  and  taught  . The  students,  in  the  course  of  their  study  in  the  gurukula   under  a  Guru  , were  always  encouraged  to  ask  meaningful  questions  ,  get  all  their  doubts  cleared  ,  so  that  their  understanding  of  the  subject  became  strengthened  . The  Guru  saw  to  it  that   the  student  never  took  anything  for  granted  but  would  question  everything  in  order  to  know  more   and  indeed  have  a  clear  knowledge  of  the  subject  taught.

We  have  seen  in  the  Gita  , Arjuna  has  been  asking  meaningful  and  universal  questions. . We  also  see  the  answers  the  Lord  has  been  giving  to  Arjuna  also  become  solutions  for  our  own  problems  . The   most  common  question  asked  by  any man  is  , "why  me " ? and  in  the  face  of  a  crisis  we  all  ask  "  what  did  I  do  to  deserve  this  ?'The  mind  of  the  ordinary  and  ignorant  man  is  totally  confused  because  for  him  there  seems  to  be  a  contradiction between  what  he  has  heard   and  what  he  has  understood   and  he  does  not  know  what  is  good  for  him.

In  the  first  and  beginnings  of the  second  chapter  we  find  Arjuna  hated  war  and  had  developed  nervousness   just  when  the  war  was  about  to  start.  and  had  put down  his  weapons  . We  have  seen    that  the  Lord  had  praised  the  path  of  knowledge  , that  the  knowledge  of  the  Self  alone  can  remove  all  sufferings  .  yet  the  Lord  had  asked  Arjuna  to  practice  karma  yoga  , to  do  his  duty,  that  of  fighting  this  war.

Arjuna  thought  he  had  a  choice  between  the  two  paths  karma  yoga  and  jnana  yoga  and  he  was  confused  as  to  why  the  Lord  had  praised  the  path  of  knowledge  while  at  the  same  time  had  asked  him  to  fight  this  war. . So  we  find   Arjuna  asking  a  meaningful  question  to  the  Lord  as  to  which  of  the  paths  was  better

to  be  continued.....
